Introduction

Disruptor Beam is a Boston-based gaming company focused on creating community and story-driven games. They created their first game based off of the ever-popular book and TV series, “Game of Thrones.” Game of Thrones Ascent now has 9 million players across all platforms. In this strategy role-playing-game, fans can immerse themselves beyond the books and TV show, living the life of a noble in Westeros.

In 2015, 29% of game industry developers made their profits from direct to consumer and digital sales and 21% from micro-transactions. Only 13% of those surveyed thought that retail was their biggest profit category. Move over brick and mortar, digital has arrived!

The gaming space has been changing rapidly over the last couple of years, and game developers are trying to figure out the best ways to get their customers all the way through to checkout. Nobody wants to leave their game mid-battle to input credit card information. This process needs to be frictionless, and this is where a payment partner can make a huge difference in how a gaming company is converting customers.

The Challenge

As games so often tell a story, Disruptor Beam was looking for a partner who could help facilitate frictionless in-game transactions for web-based players without interruption. User experience was the highest priority as they wanted their players to be able to have a simple and frictionless experience when buying upgrades, items, and quests in the game. Disruptor Beam has a global player base and they wanted to ensure that customers were comfortable checking in a multitude of different languages and locales. They knew that a lack of payment options, languages, and currencies would lead to a high rate declines.

" BlueSnap has helped increase frictionless in-game checkout conversions by 20%. "
The Solution

Disruptor Beam integrated with BlueSnap’s hosted checkout pages to give their players a global, frictionless in-game purchase process. BlueSnap’s Powered Buy Platform™ reduced development time, so Disruptor Beam was able to start using BlueSnap’s platform in under a week! Disruptor Beam integrated with BlueSnap’s Powered Buy Platform to:

  • Reduce the amount of fields needed at checkout
  • Allow customers to checkout in their local language and currency
  • Connect to more than one bank, ensuring that global payments would be routed to a local bank to increase payment success rates
  • Customize fraud rules allow customers to make frequent in-game purchases without experiencing declines. This was a huge win. For most businesses 30 purchases in under ten minutes is a major red flag. For video game players, it is completely normal to have a high volume of purchases in a short amount of time to advance to the next level. The ability to customize fraud rules to allow these frequent purchases to be processed led to a major boost in sales.
Results

As a result of switching to BlueSnap’s Powered Buy Platform, Disruptor Beam was able to achieve frictionless checkout with maximized payment conversions. Thanks to the payment platform, Disruptor Beam saw:

  • Increased profitability on each transaction of more than 20%
  • An expanded reach into over 100 countries
  • Repeat in-game purchases enabled by turning on relevant currencies and localized payment options
" With BlueSnap, our players can do their payment transaction, get their gold, and continue playing all while enjoying the stories we’re trying to tell in Game of Thrones Ascent without leaving the game. "
